Configuring Veeam Backup & Nextcloud External Storage with Sovereign Indian S3 Buckets
Configuring Veeam Backup & Nextcloud External Storage with Sovereign Indian S3 Buckets
For Indian IT infrastructure managers, system integrators, and Managed Service Providers (MSPs), protecting corporate VMware/Hyper-V virtual machines and private collaborative file stores is a top operational priority.
Two enterprise open-standard platforms dominate this space:
- Veeam Backup & Replication: The gold standard for enterprise virtual machine, Windows Server, and Linux physical server disaster recovery.
- Nextcloud Hub: The leading self-hosted private cloud productivity platform for Indian enterprises and government agencies seeking to avoid public cloud vendor lock-in.
Both platforms support S3-compatible object storage as their primary or secondary capacity tier. However, backing up multi-terabyte virtual disk images (.vbk, .vib) or archiving sensitive internal documents to overseas US/EU cloud buckets violates Indian data residency norms (such as the DPDP Act 2023 and RBI directives) while incurring exorbitant dollar-denominated egress and storage fees.
In this guide, we provide a hands-on tutorial for configuring Veeam Scale-Out Backup Repositories (SOBR) and Nextcloud External Storage with QuixiCloud M-S3 sovereign Indian buckets.
Part 1: Configuring Veeam Backup & Replication with QuixiCloud M-S3
Veeam utilizes S3 object storage within its Scale-Out Backup Repository (SOBR) architecture as the "Capacity Tier" for automated, policy-based offsite tiering and ransomware-proof immutability.

Step 1: Add New Object Storage Repository in Veeam
- Open the Veeam Backup & Replication Console.
- Navigate to Backup Infrastructure > Backup Repositories > Click Add Repository.
- Select Object Storage > Choose S3 Compatible.
- Enter a name for the repository (e.g.,
QuixiCloud-Mumbai-S3-Vault).
Step 2: Configure Service Point & Credentials
- Service Point:
https://s3.quixicloud.com - Region:
in-west-1 - Credentials: Click Add and enter your QuixiCloud Access Key and Secret Key.
Step 3: Select Bucket and Enable Immutability
- Veeam will connect to QuixiCloud and display your available buckets. Select your designated backup bucket (e.g.,
veeam-enterprise-backups). - Create or select a target folder.
- Enable Immutability (WORM): Check the box:
Make recent backups immutable for [30] days.- QuixiCloudโs S3 Object Lock compliance engine ensures that even if local administrative credentials are compromised by a ransomware attacker, the offsite backups in QuixiCloud cannot be deleted or encrypted during this retention window.
Part 2: Integrating Nextcloud with QuixiCloud Sovereign S3 Storage
Nextcloud can utilize QuixiCloud M-S3 in two primary configurations:
- Primary Object Storage: Replacing the local server disk entirely, allowing Nextcloud to scale to petabytes with zero storage management overhead.
- External Storage App: Mounting specific S3 buckets as collaborative project shares for specific departments or user groups.
Method A: Mounting S3 as External Storage (Quickest Setup)
- Log into your Nextcloud instance as an Administrator.
- Go to Apps > Enable the External Storage Support app.
- Navigate to Administration Settings > External Storage.
- Click Add Storage > Select Amazon S3:
- Configuration:
- Bucket:
nextcloud-department-shares - Hostname:
s3.quixicloud.com - Port:
443 - Region:
in-west-1 - Enable SSL: Checked (True)
- Enable Path Style: Checked (True)
- Access Key: Your QuixiCloud Key
- Secret Key: Your QuixiCloud Secret
- Bucket:
- Configuration:
- Click the green checkmark. A green indicator verifies that your sovereign Indian S3 bucket is mounted and accessible to your Nextcloud users!
Method B: Nextcloud Primary Object Storage (config.php)
To configure Nextcloud to use QuixiCloud M-S3 as its primary data store, add the following objectstore block to nextcloud/config/config.php:
'objectstore' => [
'class' => '\\OC\\Files\\ObjectStore\\S3',
'arguments' => [
'bucket' => 'nextcloud-primary-vault',
'autocreate' => false,
'key' => 'YOUR_QUIXICLOUD_ACCESS_KEY',
'secret' => 'YOUR_QUIXICLOUD_SECRET_KEY',
'hostname' => 's3.quixicloud.com',
'port' => 443,
'use_ssl' => true,
'region' => 'in-west-1',
'use_path_style' => true,
],
