How to Migrate from AWS S3 to QuixiCloud in Under 15 Minutes with Zero Downtime
How to Migrate from AWS S3 to QuixiCloud in Under 15 Minutes with Zero Downtime
When engineering teams decide to switch cloud storage providers to eliminate punishing egress fees and foreign currency billing, the primary operational concern is always migration risk:
Will our application experience downtime? How long will transferring terabytes of production data take? Do we have to rewrite our backend code?
Because QuixiCloud M-S3 implements 100% standard AWS S3 API protocols, migrating your active data from Amazon S3 to QuixiCloud is seamless, safe, and can be completed with zero application downtime.
In this tutorial, we walk through the exact, step-by-step migration process using the industry-standard open-source tool Rclone, accompanied by a dual-write zero-downtime cutover strategy.
The Zero-Downtime Migration Architecture
To migrate a live, production application without dropping a single file upload or user request, we use the standard 3-Phase Zero-Downtime Pattern:
Phase 1: Initial Sync
[ AWS S3 Bucket (Live App Writing) ] ── (Rclone Background Copy) ──> [ QuixiCloud M-S3 Bucket ]
Phase 2: Dual-Write & Delta Sync
[ Application Backend ] ── Writes to BOTH AWS S3 & QuixiCloud ──> [ Final Rclone Delta Sync ]
Phase 3: Clean Cutover
[ Application Backend ] ── Points 100% to QuixiCloud M-S3 ──> [ Decommission AWS S3 ]
Step 1: Install and Configure Rclone
Rclone is a high-performance command-line utility for managing and synchronizing files across cloud storage providers. It supports multi-threaded, parallel chunk transfers and automatic MD5/ETag checksum verification.
Install Rclone:
On your Linux server or local terminal:
# Linux / macOS install
curl https://rclone.org/install.sh | sudo bash
Configure Remotes:
Run rclone config or create an ~/.config/rclone/rclone.conf configuration file with your AWS and QuixiCloud credentials:
[aws-source]
type = s3
provider = AWS
access_key_id = YOUR_AWS_ACCESS_KEY
secret_access_key = YOUR_AWS_SECRET_KEY
region = ap-south-1
[quixicloud-target]
type = s3
provider = Other
env_auth = false
access_key_id = YOUR_QUIXICLOUD_ACCESS_KEY
secret_access_key = YOUR_QUIXICLOUD_SECRET_KEY
endpoint = https://s3.quixicloud.com
region = in-west-1
acl = private
Step 2: Execute the High-Speed Baseline Sync
With your remotes configured, trigger the initial data copy. Rclone will read objects from AWS S3 and write them directly into your QuixiCloud bucket:
rclone copy aws-source:production-assets quixicloud-target:production-assets \
--transfers 32 \
--checkers 64 \
--fast-list \
--progress
Explanation of Performance Flags:
--transfers 32: Streams up to 32 files simultaneously in parallel.--checkers 64: Verifies file metadata using 64 parallel threads.--fast-list: Uses optimized S3ListObjectsV2pagination to scan bucket directories rapidly while minimizing API request fees.--progress: Displays real-time transfer speed, elapsed time, and completion percentage.
Note: Your production application continues reading and writing to AWS S3 normally during this process. There is zero disruption to end-users.
Step 3: Enable Dual-Writing in Your Application
Once the baseline sync is nearing completion, update your application backend to write new uploads to both AWS S3 and QuixiCloud M-S3 simultaneously:
# Example Python Backend Dual-Write Pattern
import boto3
aws_s3 = boto3.client('s3', region_name='ap-south-1')
quixi_s3 = boto3.client(
's3',
endpoint_url='https://s3.quixicloud.com',
aws_access_key_id='YOUR_QUIXICLOUD_KEY',
aws_secret_access_key='YOUR_QUIXICLOUD_SECRET'
)
def save_user_file(file_data, file_name):
# 1. Primary write to AWS S3 (current live)
aws_s3.put_object(Bucket='production-assets', Key=file_name, Body=file_data)
# 2. Asynchronous or secondary write to QuixiCloud M-S3
try:
quixi_s3.put_object(Bucket='production-assets', Key=file_name, Body=file_data)
except Exception as e:
logger.warning(f"QuixiCloud dual-write mirror notice: {e}")
Dual-writing guarantees that any newly created files during the final migration window are immediately mirrored.
Step 4: Run the Final Delta Sync & Verify Integrity
Now execute an incremental delta sync to catch any files modified or added before dual-writing was enabled:
rclone sync aws-source:production-assets quixicloud-target:production-assets \
--transfers 32 \
--checkers 64 \
--fast-list \
--checksum \
--progress
Verify Object Counts & Checksums:
Run Rclone’s built-in cryptographic audit tool to verify that 100% of your data has been replicated with identical byte integrity:
rclone check aws-source:production-assets quixicloud-target:production-assets
If both buckets are identical, Rclone will report:
0 differences found, 0 errors, 100% matching.
Step 5: Final Cutover (The 3-Line Switch)
With your data verified and dual-writing active, execute the final cutover: update your application’s environment variables to point exclusively to QuixiCloud M-S3:
# .env.production
AWS_ACCESS_KEY_ID=YOUR_QUIXICLOUD_KEY
AWS_SECRET_ACCESS_KEY=YOUR_QUIXICLOUD_SECRET
AWS_REGION=in-west-1
AWS_ENDPOINT_URL=https://s3.quixicloud.com
S3_BUCKET_NAME=production-assets
Deploy your configuration change. Your application is now serving and storing 100% of its data on QuixiCloud M-S3:
- Zero minutes of user downtime.
- Zero lost files.
- Up to 3× free included egress bandwidth.
- Native Indian Rupee billing with 18% GST input credit recovery.
